What Goes on at Monthly Meetings?
In the past year, monthly meetings have examined issues including the Affordable Care Act, post-Newtown safety in our community, identity theft, the impact of the tax-levy cap on our schools, plans for Rye Playland, high property taxes, cleaning up pollution in the Long Island Sound, and more. This fall, we also co-sponsored an evening forum with the League of Women Voters of Larchmont-Mamaroneck on unfunded mandates - the problem and possible solutions.
In prior years, the Local Summit has presented, among others, programs concerning the proposed Rye Town dissolution, the Tappan Zee Bridge construction, local flooding problems, the affordable housing issue within our county, and the service and funding problems plaguing the U.S. Postal Service.
Does the Summit do More Than Talk?
While the main purpose of the Local Summit is to educate the community about various issues in a non-partisan way, there are also times when the Local Summit, or groups with Local Summit members, undertake action to meet a need or address a problem. The Local Summit has produced four editions of a Community Services Directory to help local government and social agencies cooperate with each other and share referrals. A Local Summit team was helpful in the formation and development of the Hispanic Resource Center, a local organization and venue designed to address the various needs of the immigrant community. The idea for the new group At Home on the Sound grew out of a Local Summit presentation on serving the needs of the older population; individual members of the Local Summit currently play an important role in this organization. Several members are also actively involved in organizing the annual Martin Luther King celebration.
